Alternative fuels for work vessels

Vuyk Engineering provides alternative fuels design for work vessels: methanol, hydrogen, ammonia and battery hybrid system integration.

Alternative fuel engineering for work vessels, from feasibility to fuel-ready design

Every vessel starts from its own operating profile and class pathway, so the design impact of a new fuel is worked out case by case, on retrofit and new-build alike. We work by request across the design phases: feasibility study, concept design, basic design and detailed design.

Fuel upgrade for existing vessels

Not every alternative fuel project is a new build. A large part of the work is adapting vessels already in service, where the new fuel has to fit around an existing hull, machinery arrangement and operating pattern. That constrains the design in ways a clean sheet does not.

A conversion touches the whole vessel at once. Engine systems are modified and fuel storage expanded, which drives structural reinforcement, new bunkering and fuel-handling spaces, and a fresh check on stability, lightship weight and centre of gravity once the equipment is on board. Where a full conversion is not yet the plan, we can prepare a vessel to be fuel-ready, leaving room for storage, pipe routing and the systems a later upgrade will need.

WHAT WE DESIGN AND ENGINEER

Fuel Feasibility & Selection

Case-by-case assessment of the fuel options against vessel type, operating profile, storage volume, emissions target and technology maturity, so the choice is made on evidence, not on trend.

System Integration

Integration of the fuel or hybrid power system into the vessel: what it does to layout, power generation and operational requirements, resolved against the general ship design rather than bolted on after.

Class Approval & HAZID Support

Support through approval discussions, HAZID studies and the classification documentation needed to clear a fuel system at basic design level.

Stability, Weight & Arrangement

Tank and capacity plans, loading conditions, intact and damage stability, and the lightship weight and centre-of-gravity shift that follows once new equipment goes on board.

Structural Modifications

Structural drawings and local reinforcements for machinery, piping, bunkering stations, tank spaces and fuel-handling rooms, and the penetrations a new fuel system drives through the structure.

Fire Safety, Hazardous Areas & Ventilation

Firefighting systems, ventilation shut-off dampers, purging systems, hazardous-zone equipment and the safeguards a methanol or battery installation requires.

Fuels and technologies we design for:

Methanol

Fuel system design philosophy, tank arrangement, fuel preparation spaces and bunkering station, to basic design level with class documentation.

Fuel system design philosophy and vessel upgrade context, with the consequences for storage, fuel supply and system safety worked through.

Assessment as a fuel or hydrogen carrier, covering storage volume, toxicity, engine maturity and the regulatory limits that still apply.

Battery Energy Storage System integration: battery and converter room arrangement, ventilation, shutdown logic, fire mitigation and Ex equipment.

Assessed alongside the other options where they suit the vessel’s operating profile and emissions target.

Considered within fuel-and-prime-mover studies where the operational case and technology maturity support them.

WHY CHOOSE VUYK

Four reasons technical buyers come back

01

Fuel choice made on the vessel, not on the trend

The assessment starts from the vessel, its operating profile and the required class pathway. Methanol, hydrogen, ammonia, biofuels and battery hybrid systems each hit the design differently, and we say where a fuel is still a study rather than a settled option.

02

The whole design in one office

Fuel storage, safety systems, structural changes, stability and power balance are assessed together, because a new fuel touches all of them at once. Our four specialisms sit under one roof, so those effects are resolved in one place.

03

Class pathway and HAZID from the start

We support HAZID preparation, class discussions and the documentation needed for approval at basic design level, so the approval route is built into the design instead of chased after it.

04

Unique blend of specialisms

We are not only specialists in each discipline, but also guarantee optimal synergy when multiple elements come together in your project.
